What was the economical context?

During the disco rise, the economy was in the worst shape it’s ever been. The 1970s were a time when people struggled so much financially, especially in New York. This is commonly referred to as the New York fiscal crisis, in which the city couldn’t afford to repay its debts. The crisis resulted in thousands of people losing their jobs in New York City and revealed how politicians advanced their economic and political objectives during this era. Political change caused African American and Latino communities to be isolated by urban renewal programs and discrimination in the workforce. They were faced with segregation policies that were detrimental financially and mentally, resulting in a need for distraction. This crisis explains why many people from Black and Latino communities took comfort in spaces with disco.
